I've put the Anzio Catterick repeater back on air, however there are some changes to it that mean it isn't performing as it was.
Firstly it is currently on top of my kitchen cabinets, meaning it is inside, this means signal strength is reduced some but not horrendously as my companion devices are finding other repeaters and client stations via the larger Yorkshire Mesh and the rest of the UK-wide mesh as a whole, secondly it is solely running on batteries, however the batteries were installed fully charged yesterday after a recharge in an external charger and they are down to 4.05V (the batteries used are lithium 18650s with a nominal voltage of 3.7V, so anything over this is very close to a full charge, there is no longer a solar charge facility, it will get a charge via USB instead from a nearby socket though this won't be for a while and this unit will survive power outages for days, this is Catterick Garrison after all and power cuts happen often in the slightest breeze due to ancient electrical infrastructure that Northern Powergrid haven't updated.
The repeater can see Yorkshire Mesh's YM-SM as a single-hop neighbour but at a weak signal, improvements would be made if the repeater was outdoors, however on that side of the building it is line of sight to Sutton Bank, on a clear day it is normally possible to see Bilsdale Transmitting Station from that window, on a night the red lights on the Mk2 mast at that facility are clearly visible if the weather is clear.
Putting it in position outside the living room window again has been ruled out due to weather and the mounting method I used not being strong enough to hold it if the winds get above 25MPH as has been the case for the last few days in particular.
I am now in a position to test out new repeater sites as well, while all my other hardware is running the latest firmware for MeshCore my test repeater (based on RP2040 hardware, a Raspberry Pi Pico) is still at an outdated firmware and also needs building up into an enclosure, this will begin next month and will reveal the best spots to help make the mesh bigger, the repeater will always identify as a test repeater and I will always post here and to X to let you know that I am carrying out these tests.
Centrally MeshCore has decided on new presets, I will update the setup guide for this in due course, the Yorkshire Mesh uses this new preset and for compatibility with the UK-wide mesh the Richmondshire Mesh uses it now as well.
I will be carrying out further tests in the coming days as time and other commitments permit
